Primary Audience Research

To begin my primary audience research I have created a questionnaire which consists of 8 questions which will help me find out what people's expectations are of a horror film magazine cover, film poster and trailer. I decided to use a paper questionnaire instead of an online questionnaire. Although it may take longer for me to collect and evaluate my data I think this is a better way of collecting information because it is more personal as I will be able to interact with my audience. I will be handing out 15 questionnaires as I think this will give me enough feedback to analyse and then improve and develop my ideas for the products I will be creating.

This is my questionnaire:

These are the extra pages needed to answer questions 5 & 7:

From the PowerPoint above you can see that I have collected a lot of useful data from my primary audience research.

The pie chart I created for question 1 shows that the most popular kind of horror film within my audience is 'stalker' with a result of 47%. These results have made me rethink my film trailer idea. I originally decided to do a paranormal themed trailer as this matches the other trailers I have researched, however after collecting this data and seeing that stalker themed horror trailer films are more popular by a total of 20% I have now decided on a stalker themed trailer.

The pie chart I created for question 2 shows that the kind of music which gets the biggest response out of my audience is eerie music with a total of 40%. Although this is the most popular the overall percentages of each option for this question did not differ that much with discordant at 27% and quick paced/action soundtrack with 33%, therefore I am considering using all 3 types of music throughout different points in my trailer to make it more effective.

The pie chart I created for question 4 shows that the representation most preferred in a horror film trailer is 'evil concurs good' with a result of 53%. From this information I will take into consideration to use this representation in my horror film trailer so that it will appeal to my audience.

The pie chart I created for question 5 shows that the horror film magazine cover which stands out the most to my audience is C (shown above) with a result of 46%. In question 6 a person stated that the reason this one stood out the most to them is because "the dark colours emphasise the horror and fear", other people also said comments such as "the low angle shot makes the character look threatening", from these comments and the results from this question I have decided to try and recreate this image for my horror magazine front cover using my own characters and editing.

The pie chart I created for question 7 shows that the horror film poster which stands out the most to my audience is C (shown above) with a result of 40%. In question 8 a person stated that the reason this one stood out the most them is because "the image is unclear which makes me want to find out what it's about", another person also commented saying "the grey/blue filter makes it look creepy". However, film poster D was also popular with a result of 33%, therefore from these results I have collected from this question I have decided I try and recreate both C and D film posters for my own product and then select the one which looks most effective for my final film poster.
