Researching trailers and shot types

In order to create a range of more effective shots I have been viewing and researching a variety of trailers of the same genre as me, horror. I have watched each trailer carefully and picked out shots which I think would be useful and which I could recreate using my own settings, actors and props.

- The Haunting of Helena

- Holla

- Mischief Night

- House at the end of the street

- The Intruders

- A Nightmare on Elm Street

I used Itunes to research 6 new trailers, all named above. I closely watched and analysed them all and picked out different shots which I felt were effective and that I could re-interpret into my own trailer. I selected these 11 shots because I felt they did a good job of getting a reaction out of me and making me scared, the dark lighting and close-ups of both antagonists and protagonists made me feel this way. The dark lighting was effective because it shows clear conventions of the horror genre, this is something my audience said I needed to improve in my trailer as they felt the overall horror effect was not given because some of my shots were too light. The close-ups of the antagonists were effective because it made me feel as if they were near me therefore making me frightened. The close-ups of the protagonists were effective because they helped me to empathise with the characters, I could therefore feel the same fear that they did.
